Valances

Custom window valances are made of fabric to create specific shapes, which means that there is a nearly endless variety of choices. They are often made with a pocket and installed with a curtain rod, although we can also construct them as board-mounted styles or install them with rings or hold backs. Choose from swags, balloons, flat valances, gathered and many more.

Cornices

Cornices are structured boxes, often made of wood, that frame the top of a window. These boxes are frequently covered with fabric to create a layered look to custom window coverings. Roseworks fabrication builds custom window cornices, made to order.

  • What’s the difference between window valances and cornices?

Window valances and cornices are both decorative treatments for the tops of windows, but they differ in structure, material, and appearance.  Custom window valances are soft and constructed of fabric into styles that include pleated, gathered, scalloped, and others. By contrast, custom window cornices are built using wood or other solid materials, then covered in fabric. They are often used as a boxy top over custom drapes for a formal, layered look.

  • Can I combine valances and cornices with other window treatments like curtains or blinds?

Custom made window valances and cornices can both be combined with other window treatments like curtains, blinds, or shades for a more sophisticated, layered look.  Position them over drapery, roller shades, louvered blinds or custom roman shades to hide unwanted hardware, enhance their design and soften the feeling of the window covering.

  • How do I choose the right style of valance or cornice for my windows?

Choosing the right style of custom window valance or cornice depends on your window shape, room style, and functional needs. Cornices offer a cleaner, sharper look that better suits more contemporary designs. Their straight edges and sharper lines are more ideal for modern spaces.  By contrast, custom window valances tend to be softer and more traditional. Both styles can be shaped to fit even the most challenging spaces, making them a popular choice for irregularly shaped windows.

  • Do custom window valances and cornices help with light control and privacy?

Custom made valances and cornices can help with light blocking when layered with other types of window coverings. In particular, valances can be shaped to block light leaks along the sides of other coverings, in addition to areas along the top of the window. Pair them with sheers, custom drapery, blinds, and roller shades for a comprehensive window system that looks fantastic in your space.

  • Are custom valances and cornices a good option for large or irregularly shaped windows?

Custom valances and cornices are excellent options for large or irregularly shaped windows. They can be shaped to follow the curves of arched windows, or angled to fit in bay or sloped windows. Designers love them for thier versatility and the ability to elevate other drapery styles into a sophisticated, layered look that is undeniably custom.
